Are there any possible risks associated with cosmetic plastic surgery?

There are risks associated with any surgical procedure including such risks as bleeding, possible infection, etc. Do some research, learn what the risks are for the specific procedure you are considering, how often they occur and how they will be handled if they do occur. If your doctor does not openly discuss the risks or admit that there are always risks, seek another opinion.

What are some of the most common types of cosmetic plastic surgeries?

The most frequently performed surgeries include breast augmentation surgery, rhinoplasty, facelift and eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).

Is cosmetic plastic surgery performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia?

Depending upon what is most appropriate for the patient's particular situation, the surgeon will decide what type of anesthesia to use.

How long does the surgical procedure usually take?

On an average, most surgeries take 2 to 3 hours in the operating room, while more extensive, multiple procedure surgeries can last 5 to 7 hours. Additional time is often required for preparation before, and recovery time after the surgery itself, particularly when sedation or a general anesthetic is administered.

Can anything be done to do to minimize swelling or bruising following plastic surgery?

Yes, if your procedure has been performed on the face, it may make sense to sleep in a reclining position as opposed to a horizontal position for several days following plastic surgery to minimize the collection of fluids in the face and eyelids. You will be given instructions for making and administering your cold and warm compresses - follow them closely. These practices will not only reduce bruising and swelling, but they will also maximize and promote healing following your cosmetic plastic surgery.

Will there be any visible scarring after cosmetic plastic surgery?

Any time a cut or incision is made in the skin, a scar left behind as part of the normal healing process. Plastic surgeons have received extensive training and have years of experience with minimizing the size of these scars, allowing for the least noticeable appearance of scars and locating them at the most inconspicuous of areas as possible. Often, over time, the scars will become undetectable to all but the most careful of examinations.

How long will the benefits of cosmetic plastic surgery last?

The results of your cosmetic plastic surgery depend on the particular procedure you undergo as well as lifestyle. In general, results from most plastic surgery procedures are long lasting and are enhanced by maintaining a healthy weight and overall healthy lifestyle.

What is the recovery like from cosmetic plastic surgery?

Following surgery, each patient will tolerate pain in different ways. Your plastic surgeon will prescribe the appropriate pain medications to help minimize any discomfort you experience. Generally, most facial cosmetic surgeries have minimal discomfort post-operatively. Liposuction is slightly more uncomfortable and surgeries requiring elevation or tightening of the muscles, such as breast augmentation, can cause noticeably more discomfort.

How soon can I return to work following cosmetic plastic surgery?

The length of time it takes to recover after cosmetic plastic surgery varies depending on the patient, as well as the procedure performed. Most patients will need assistance for the first two to four days following cosmetic plastic surgery.
